      About the Western History Collections

      WHC Reading Room

      The Western History Collections is a special collection within the University of Oklahoma Libraries system. Its purpose is to enhance the University Libraries general collection on the history of the American West; to support the research and teaching programs of the University of Oklahoma; and to provide opportunities for research through the acquisition, preservation, and access of materials relating to the development of the Trans-Mississippi West and Native American cultures.


        From the Pueblos to the Northern Plains: American Indian Art from the Holdings of the Western History Collections

        Currently on display in the reading room is an exhibit of pottery, baskets, ledger art, and paintings created by American Indians living in the American Southwest, Great Plains, and Northern Plains The pieces are part of the Western History Collections holdings spanning several collections.

        Highlights of the exhibit include pottery made by Maria Martinez, the famous potter of San Ildefonso; paintings by Arapaho artist Carl Sweezy; and ledger art by Lakota chief Joseph White Bull. The exhibit also includes baskets and pottery from the Art Collection, postcards sowing American Indian art as tourism from the Postcard Collection, an interview notebook from the Walter Stanley Campbell Collection, photographs of Maria Martinez creating pottery from the Alice Marriott Photograph Collection, and American Indian tourism brochures from the James McDowell, Sr. Collection.
