Like the price tag on a university education, college textbook costs have more than doubled since 2001, presenting a significant barrier to student success. Over 60 percent of students do not purchase required textbooks because of the cost and over 40 percent do not enroll in courses due to textbook costs, according to a 2018 survey from Florida Virtual Campus.

Fortunately, course material costs are something instructors can control, and OU Libraries will even pay you to use course materials that your students can access for free through the Alternative Textbook Grant (ATG). Since 2014, the Alternative Textbook Grant has saved OU students millions of dollars in course material costs. OU Libraries awards up to $2,500 for successful applications, and some colleges award discretionary funds to supplement the total award amount.
