Public Opportunity to Review and Comment
Review and Comment Period: Generally
Once an agency publishes a draft EIS, there is a minimum 45 days for the public to comment on the document. Agencies also conduct public meetings, where citizens can attend in person and make comment. Oftentimes, agencies publish notice of public meetings on their agency website.
Environmental Impact Statement
The EPA Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Database provides information about past and present EISs prepared by federal agencies, as well as the EPA's comment concerning the EISs. All EISs are published with the EPA and the EPA publishes a weekly "Notice of Availability" in the Federal Register. The "Notice of Availability" is a public notice that a draft environmental impact statement is available for public review and comment.
Locate or Post a Public Comment
All public comments, whether submitted electronically or in paper form, will be made available for public viewing in the electronic public docket at Regulations.gov as the EPA receives them and without change, unless the comment contains copyrighted material, confidential business information, or other information whose disclosure is restricted by statute. Once in the public docket system, select "search" then key in the appropriate docket ID number.
Commenting on EPA Dockets
The EPA's preferred method of receiving comments is Regulations.gov. However, other submission formats are accepted.
