Major Public Laws

The Bankruptcy Act of 1898 (ch. 541, 30 Stat. 544) was the first long-term bankruptcy legislation, and it governed bankruptcy cases for nearly eighty years. Then, in 1978, Congress passed the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978 (Pub. L. No. 95-598, 92 Stat. 2549), which was the beginning of modern-day bankruptcy law. The Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978 repealed the Bankruptcy Act of 1898.
