- AVON: Academic Video OnlineStreaming academic video content, including acclaimed and award-winning interdisciplinary documentaries, independent non-fiction films, training and instructional videos, foreign films and shorts, and other educational titles. Effective January 1, 2021 AVON video access is mediated. This means that any video not licensed for use prior to that date will require the user to request access. Access is being enabled for class use with instructor approval.
- HathiTrust Digital LibraryShared digital repository of library books and journals converted from print owned by research institutions. HathiTrust Digital Library does not permit download or viewing the full text of books that are still under copyright (typically published since 1923). Only materials that are no longer under copyright may be viewed online or downloaded.
- JSTORMostly full-text access to content from core journals. NOTE: while most JSTOR journals begin from the first issue of a given title, there is frequently an embargo on the most recent years. JSTOR should not be relied upon as a sole source for scholarly research.
- Kanopy Streaming VideoWatch feature and educational films online, on any device. International content, including the Criterion Collection. Effective October 1, 2018, Kanopy video access is mediated. This means that any video not licensed for use prior to that date will require the user to request access. Access is being enabled for class use with instructor approval.
- New World Cinema: Independent Features and ShortsStreaming full-length feature films from leading independent distributors and award-winning short films.
- Project MuseLargely full-text collection of articles from core journals. Generally limited to most recent 5-7 years.
On the Open Web
There are a number of free, useful web resources related to Japan Studies and some have been listed here. Many of these sites are supported by the Japanese government or other public research institutions. Still, you should always verify the source of any information you find. This will be updated as more resources are found.
- Google JapanGoogle Japan may return better results on topics that are difficult to find information about on US Google, particularly when conducting searches in Japanese.
- Denshi JishoThis free online dictionary is updated frequently with new slang, cultural references, and abbreviations. You can search in English and Japanese (kanji or romaji) by typing, handwriting, speech, or radicals. Examples are provided for each word and labels indicate how common the word's usage is.
- CiNiiA database that searches articles, theses, dissertations, books, and journals held by university libraries in Japan, all available free of charge. Japanese and English interface available.
- NHK Broadcasting Culture Research InstituteNHK regularly conducts public opinion polls to support programming and discussions about the state of the media. The results of these polls are made public and are accessible here in Japanese. Shortened synopses of these results are made available in English.
- J-STAGEThis open access database includes journal articles, conference proceedings, technical and research reports, and magazine articles about a variety of topics, including the sciences, engineering and technology, interdisciplinary disciplines such as environmental studies, and the humanities and social sciences. Most of the articles have full-text access. Both Japanese and English resources are available.
- National Institute of Japanese LiteratureThis institution serves as an archive and repository of premodern Japanese literature. Many texts from their library are available digitally and even more are accessible through ILL. Searchable database to browse images and premodern texts on literature, medicine, science and more. Site interface in English and Japanese.
- East Asia Image CollectionArchive of digitized photographs, negatives, postcards, and slides of imperial Japan (1868-1945), its Asian empire (1895-1945) and occupied Japan (1947-52). Images of Taiwan, Japan, China, Korea, Manchuria , and Indonesia are included.
- MIT Global ShakespearesA collaborative project providing online access to performances of Shakespeare from many parts of the world as well as essays and metadata by scholars and educators in the field.
- Project GutenbergFree e-books from the public domain.
