AI in the Library

As generative AI, and AI in tools become more common, it's good to know the basic ins and outs of using AI tools. This guide will help the OU community learn more about AI, the ethics, data safety and privacy concerns with using AI.

Generative AI

Copilot

Copilot is an LLM developed by Microsoft that responds to user prompts and works seamlessly with Microsoft products such as Word and Excel. Copilot is based on OpenAI's GPT-4 and DALL-E 3 (image generation) models and integrated with the Bing search index. Copilot is available through Microsoft/Microsoft 365, Bing, and the Microsoft Edge web browser. Logging into Copilot chat through Microsoft 365 with OU credentials will provide enhanced privacy and data protection for OU institutional data. For more information, visit the OU IT link below.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is developed by OpenAI and started as a text-based LLM, or "chatbot." This model uses GPTs (e.g. GPT-4, GPT-4o) to generate content such as text, speech, and media content (images, video, audio) in response to user prompts. The most common version of ChatGPT is multi-modal and can respond to voice, image, and video prompts. ChatGPT can be used as a writing tool and for brainstorming research ideas with prompt engineering and responsible credibility/source verification.

Gemini

Gemini is an LLM model developed by Google and functions with Google Search to ask questions, generate media, assist with learning tasks, and brainstorm ideas with a "live" feature that responds to voice prompts. Gemini also houses Deep Research, a deep learning feature that can help users plan, search, reason, and report on research topics.

Goblin Tools

Goblin Tools is a platform with a simple user-friendly dashboard of genAI tools that can assist neurodivergent individuals with everyday tasks that might be challenging or overwhelming.

Adobe Firefly

Firefly is a GenAI tool that generates creative content such as images and videos in response to text or reference media. Firefly can be used as a standalone application or within the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, and can be found as a feature on several Adobe applications to manipulate and enhance image content. Firefly is trained on Adobe stock images and licensed content, so it is intended to be safe for commercial use.
