Animals in the Library
What is a Service Animal?
- Includes dogs and miniature horses.
- Covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Intensive training to perform specific tasks.
- Generally allowed in all areas where the public is allowed.
What is an Emotional Support Animal?
- Includes a variety of animals.
- Not covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Covered by the Federal Housing Administration and the Transportation Security Administration to protect against discrimination in housing and travel.
- Not specifically trained to perform tasks.
- Prescribed by a provider to assist with a disability.
- Allowed in housing and transportation.
- Can be allowed as accommodation in schools and work places.
Guidelines
- Service animals are not pets and should not be petted without the permission of the animal’s owner.
- If you see an animal at the library and aren’t sure it’s allowed in the building, there are two questions you can ask:
- Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? (We do not ask about the nature of the disability.)
- What work or task has the animal been trained to do?
- We should not ask for documentation. Consult with the Disability Resource Center before excluding any animal from the library.
- That said, any animal that is causing a disturbance may be asked to leave until the animal is under control. This includes service animals and emotional support animals.
If you have questions, contact the OU Disability Resource Center.

Discover Report A Problem Emails
Cari Roberts tracks her public communication emails through her own system. However, admin wants Cari's public communications to be recorded in LibAnswers along with the other Web Services public communications transactions. Since Cari doesn't know LibAnswers very well, and already has a lot on her plate, we are going to help her add her public communications to the Web Services Queue as well as the Web Services Dataset.
- Cari forwards her Discover Report a Problem emails to: libwebhelp@ou.libanswers.com. These emails will go directly into the Web Services Queue.
